Livingston Manor's own MazMyth is an award winning progressive fusion rock band. Having played the mainstage at the Bamboozle festival at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, they return to Sullivan County to kick off the "Under The Moon In Callicoon" concert series. High energy, intricate rhythms and electronically generated sounds combine to create an amazing aural experience.

Opening act AventeGorz is based in Cochecton and plays regularly with MazMyth. Sammy Sackstein, a professional hoop dancer, promises to accompany AventeGorz at this show.

Callicoon Creek Park is located on A. Dorrer Drive between Lander's and Peck's in Callicoon, New York.

Basket Landing is a folk music and dance ensemble. The band performs a mix of traditional American Folk music and songs from the British Isles, Canada, and Australia--sweet Appalachian folk ballads, lilting Irish melodies, seafaring tunes, Ozark Mountain bluegrass, an vibrant spirituals.

Basket Landing is accompanied by the Basket Landing Dancers for many of its performances. The dancers range from ages nine to twenty-three and perform a wide variety of international folk dances, including Ukrainian, Irish, Scottish, English, Italian, Bulgarian and American selections.

"Under The Moon In Callicoon" is a concert series produced by Janet Burgan for the Callicoon Creek Park Association. This concert is made possible in part with funds from the Decentralization Program for Sullivan County, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.

On Saturday, August 6th the park will be hosting an outdoor dance party and fundraiser for the NACL Theatre.

Fun starts at 6:00pm with a DJ from 7:00 to 11:00pm

NACL is a local professional theatre ensemble that creates cutting-edge theatre, stilt walking performances, offers children’s theatre classes, and presents contemporary performance by local and international artists. The company operates a church-turned theatre and an artists’ residence in Highland Lake, NY. The company is currently touring its newest family performance, THE LITTLE FARM SHOW, a musical extravaganza about farming, food, and environmental sustainability. This year the show will tour to theatres and schools across the county, New York City, and to cities in the northeast.

Second Annual Callicoon Creek Park Plant Swap: Veggies, Herbs, Ornamentals and Friends!

May 21, 2011 dawned without rain (which is almost worth saying twice!) and by 9:30 am, local gardeners were stocking the Callicoon Creek Park Plant Swap tent with pots and flats of brussels sprouts, oregano, lilies, garlic for eating and planting, geraniums, chives, broccoli, hot peppers, salad peppers, baking peppers, hostas, hundreds of heirloom tomatoes, and much, much more.

Besides welcoming our community to The Callicoon Creek Park and encouraging the growth of kitchen gardens, this year's Swap was designed to raise awareness of The IOU Thrift Store on Main Street in Callicoon and the many supports it offers Callicoon-area families struggling to buy nutritious food and pay their fuel bills. If you want to learn more about IOU's Blessings Food Pantry, their holiday baskets and toy exchange, the counseling services they help subsidize and their fuel bank, please stop by The Thrift Store on Lower Main in Callicoon. They're friendly, helpful and offer a wonderful assortment of clothes, appliances and furniture for everyone!

At 10 am, our first official swapper was Linda Bastian who rattled off--three times fast--"Callicoon Creek Park Plant Swap" and was rewarded with an embossed ceramic pot planted with a hearty batch of oregano. (Thanks to Ginny Boyle!) In fact, Linda returned several times and even dug up flowers donated by Mother Joan LaLiberte and brought those along with her own flowering geraniums.

Three Times Fast!

The camaraderie of Swap Day itself is a joy but I think my favorite thing is knowing that as each winter turns to spring, Linda’s geraniums, Marcie’s mint, Joan’s Episcopal lilies, and Ginny’s oregano will be poking through the soil in untold gardens for as long as someone tends them.

In that light, The Callicoon Creek Park Association offers especial thanks to:

The Delaware Valley Farm & Garden store (Agway) for its generous donation of pepper, tomato, brussels sprouts and broccoli seedlings which left the tent like hotcakes;
Sondra Patton for transporting a huge variety and hundreds of heirloom tomatoes and squashes from her greenhouse in Long Island;
Will Conway, Master Gardener and subject of a recent Our Country Home article, who spent the entire day with us answering questions and providing recommendations for plant selection, siting, soil and pest management, complementary sowing and weed controls. We were extremely grateful for his knowledge and ability to de-mystify the horticultural tangle of Latin and soil types.

And to the many swappers who made the day a success with the gifts they brought and took away we say, "Be sure to visit next year! Thanks to your generosity, several new plantings will be seen in the Park this summer--ask about them when you come down for our Under The Moon in Callicoon concert series in July!--and we were even able to split $130 with The IOU whose programs are so necessary in these difficult economic times."

UPDATE: "Under the Moon in Callicoon" Concert Series 2011

The park will be alive with the sound of music, all sorts of music, come July, in our second annual "Under the Moon" concert series. CCPA's mission of a diverse slate for the season has been accomplished with the addition of a night of rock, featuring not one but two local young bands with bright futures. MazMyth is a five piece progressive fusion band from Livingston Manor with a fast spreading fan base and an impressive list of credits. They will rock the park on July 16, along with opener AventeGorz, self-described on My Space as "Three people uniting into a sound of mass confusion and energy for a matter of moments." The three, from Cochecton, play alternative/psychedelic rock.

Opening the series on July 8, as promised, will be the always well-received Basket Landing, eclectic folk musicians, singers and dancers from Hankins.

Our third concert will bring Chacho Ramirez's Universa Trio, following the Dr. Mambo. Chacho is a musical director, drummer, and composer who performs in the New York metropolitan area, making beautiful music based on West African and Latin rhythms, using standard jazz forms. On July 23, we will have him and his friends all to ourselves!

Closing the season as only he can, Barbecue Bob will return with the Spareribs on July 30 for his annual smokin' R&B dance party in the park. We love being a regular gig on Bob's busy schedule of performances all over the Northeast! (He makes it south, too, keeping the barbecue real.) Opening for Bob once again will be our own Janet Burgan, singer, songwriter, concert producer, and really cool MC.

All shows take place at 8 p.m. in Callicoon Creek Park, off Audley Dorrer Drive, in Callicoon, NY. The suggested donation at the door is $12, children under 12 will be admitted free.

The July 16, 23 and 30 concerts are partially funded by a 2011 Decentralization grant, allocated by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered locally by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Narrowsburg, NY.

You have just six weeks to get ready!

Plant your favorite seedlings and then swap for something you've never grown before! Share your spring cullings!

BUT, before you grab that list you've been compiling since the teaser-days of March, we're trying some new things this year (including a seed swap):

The Swap is flora-ecumenical. All plants and seeds are invited! (Heirloom seeds will swap like hot cakes!) (Just like last year, non-food plants left after The Swap will be donated to The Callicoon Creek Park.)

This year, we're encouraging extra seeds, veggies & herbs which we'll share with area families (The Callicoon Thrift Store/IOU Food Pantry* is in trouble. As is their home heating bank. The more veggies in the Swap, the more we'll be able to "plant" in the hands of families who'll put them to good use. Strategies are still being devised and suggestions are welcome!)

Extra Pots & Containers. Honestly! If you share some of your pots, cans & baskets, you'll be able to park in the garage next winter! (Container gardens are a great way for "newbie gardeners" to succeed their first time which makes life better all the way around.)

An on-site Master Gardener. Not just for Newbies! After the Swap last year, we wrote, "...the tented area [was filled] with an evergreen shrub...and truth be told, stuff we couldn't identify." We also received many cultivation and pest repellant questions so we've asked a local guru to donate some Swap Advice.

No plants, pots/containers to swap? Join us anyway. The non-swap prices are very inviting!

CCPA is springing forward with plans for activities in the park, including a second annual plant sale, our continuing Under the Moon in Callicoon Concert Series, and another midsummer ArtFest presented by the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA).

This year, Under the Moon in Callicoon will feature diverse performances of folk, blues, jazz and rock. Tentative dates are Friday, July 8 for popular local folkies Basket Landing, Saturday, July 16 for Latin jazz legend Chaco Ramirez, Saturday July 23, TBA, and Saturday, July 30, for the blues, masterfully delivered in a three-peat by the beloved Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs. Opening for Bob once again will be concert series producer and chanteuse extraordinaire Janet Burgan.

In a three-peat of our own, we are proud to have received a Decentralization grant for our 2011 concert series, allocated by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered locally by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA), for which we are most grateful.

The last concert in our Under The Moon In Callicoon is this Saturday, August 21st at 8PM. The Holy Cows from NYC will open the show and then Middletown based The Dan Brother Band will play until 11PM. Come on down to the Park and celebrate the successful season of concerts!! As always, bring your picnics, chairs and dancing shoes and be ready to party!!

The Holy Cows, based in New York City, play an eclectic mix of original songs featuring country, rockabilly, and psychedelic rock influences, with plenty of guitar twang!

For those unfamiliar with the Hudson Valley Blues Scene, it can be surprising that the region has been home to such renowned blues talent as Bill Perry, Popa Chubby, Murali Coryell and Little Sammy Davis among others. But it was under the tutelage of these master bluesmen, that Dan Brother began his guitar playing and singing career.

Since his teens, Dan Brother has been performing in venerable local blues clubs like The Corner Stage, Waterwheel Café, Bodle’s Opera House, and The Downtown. Having shared the stage with mentors like his, it’s no wonder Dan picked up a little of everything along the way – from protest era psychedelia to straight-up blues; classic era soul to southern rock and Texas twang.

Now in his twenties, Dan’s star is rising faster than ever. Having turned all that early on-stage learning into a sound all his own, Dan’s high energy performances are drawing fans new and old to an increasing number of gigs and venues every month. Dan’s fans expect a mix of blues, soul, rock & roll, and the band accommodates, with sets that go from low-down monstrous slow blues to booty-grooving ecstatic funk.

Fiery guitar work is Dan’s forte. He twists and squeezes notes out of his guitar with furious aplomb, often leaving all kinds of audiences – from young college crowds to older fans of guitar music – with a look of “whoa” on their faces. Unlike so many guitar slingers, he is also a gifted songwriter. His upcoming debut CD will feature a dozen tracks all written or co-written by Dan. These road tested songs – including the crowd pleasing (Plain Ol’) White Girl – have already proven to be built on danceable grooves, with memorable sing-along hooks.

Dan’s band, eponymously named, currently features Pedro “Big Thurrsty” Johnson on drums and Jason Upchurch on electric bass guitar. The roots power trio format of The Dan Brother Band is also often augmented with some of Dan’s longtime musical friends.

Barbecue Bob & The Spareribs A Hit!

Saturday's concert with Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs and me was great fun. Families started arriving at about 6 o'clock with their barbecues in tow. It was a lovely evening for a cook-out and as the sun went down the stars came out. So did about 200 people!! Lawn chairs, coolers and picnics were spread out and there were more than a few children running, dancing and playing. What a joy to look down from the stage and watch the young ones having such fun! And then, the band we'd all been waiting for since last summer - BARBECUE BOB AND THE SPARERIBS!!! The dancing started and the party was in full swing. As usual, Bob and the Ribs had the joint jumpin' for two hours straight - no rest for the wicked (and you can decide who the wicked were)! What a fabulous night - thanks to all who helped make this concert happen, worked so hard and especially to the audience. We couldn't put on a show like this without you!! I have a feeling we'll be doing this again next year - so mark your calendars for the last Saturday of July! And, don't forget the last concert in the Under The Moon In Callicoon 2010 series, Saturday, August 21st with The Holy Cows and the Dan Brother Band.

This Saturday night's show will go on RAIN OR SHINE, with my opening set at 8PM and Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs starting a little after 9PM!! Our rain venue is the Delaware Youth Center, so be sure to put us on your calendars. Last year when I was invited to put a concert together for the Park, my immediate thought was to book Barbecue Bob & the Spareribs. I've known Barbecue Bob for many years as we were both on the same circuit in New York City. As a matter of fact, I went out on my nights off if Bob was playing. That's saying something when you're a bar musician--the last place you want to you on your night off is another bar!! But to hear Bob and the boys--you betcha!! I'm thrilled that we can reprise our concert this year. If you attended last year, you know how great it was, if not - you'll have to join us this year. I guarantee you a fabulous time. We've had to make a doggy decision, though. As a courtesy for others, please leave your pooch at home.

From noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010 New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and the Callicoon Creek Park Association (CCPA) will present exhibitors selling their art-goods or providing other forms of engagement and participation at Callicoon Creek Park. Exhibitors include over 35 artists, artisans, contemporary art galleries, art collectives, publishers, and activist citizen groups from near and far. Delaware Valley Opera Company, Zintas Yoga, Lucy in the Sky, MGM Grand, and Walter Dunderville will perform, and soap boxes await poets, storytellers and political orators. As we go to post, rumors of hamster boxing, pig racing and mule sniffing remain unconfirmed, but bric-a-brac, nic-a-nac, and good times are assured. Kids of all ages can temper their excitement at the alpaca petting zoo, so come one, come all to Callicoon's fabulous creek-side Park on Audley Dorrer Drive, next to Peck's parking lot.

Riff Kings & Beaverkill 5-4321 Concert A Smash!!

Saturday’s concert was a blast! Well over 100 people attended and partied their feet off dancing to Beaverkill 5-4321 and The Riff Kings. The fun started as the sound check (Joe Murray, our engineer from Woodstock Stage & Screen is awesome!) was happening and we were setting up the tables. It started to rain. We scrambled to keep the tablecloths and flyers dry. A beautiful rainbow appeared and the rain stopped.

Beaverkill 5-4321 (now known as Hezekiah Loveland) hit the stage a little after 8PM and got the party started. As dusk fell, Dominique Jenkins from Matthew’s On Main came over to introduce the Riff Kings and the dancing started in earnest. Thanks, Matthew’s, for sponsoring the Riff Kings for the first concert of the season. How fortunate that it didn’t rain again. Apparently it rained really hard out at Bethel Woods during the Moody Blues concert. We had audience members from there that arrived to our Park soaking wet.

What a great start to our 2010 concert season. I can’t wait to do it again this Friday!

Riff Kings To Kick Off Summer Concert Series!!

I've just sent out all the press for our first concert for the "Under The Moon In Callicoon" summer concert series. I can't wait to hear the Riff Kings on Saturday, July 10th! My friend Darren Wiseman and his band, Beaverkill 5-4321 will open the show at 8PM. Peter Florance, the guitarist of the Riff Kings, describes the band as "50's and 60's dance music with originals in that same vein." The Riff Kings are based in Honesdale, Pennsylvania and Peter has a company called Peter Florance Voodoo Pickups, a company that hand makes guitar pickups. So grab your honey and your dancing shoes and get ready to party!!

Plant Swap: "How Cool!"

To borrow from the film, Field of Dreams, "Put up a tent and they will come!"

And come they did. We met neighbors we never knew we had from south of Narrowsburg, the heart of Fremont and across the River in Damascus.

Tom, recently retired, had returned to gardening after years of not having time. In his zeal (don't we know!) he found himself with more tomato plants, red and yellow small and sweet strawberries and peppers than he could possible plant or eat.

Long-time neighbors like Jo Clearwater (many thanks for the flats of flowers!) filled our tables and the tented area with an evergreen shrub, herbs, perennials, annuals and truth be told, stuff we couldn't identify.

The River Valley morning dawned on a perfect spring day and The Callicoon Creek Park, freshly mowed (thanks to our Town workers!) stretched in welcome along the banks of the Delaware River. Many "swappers" had seen our postings on the Upper Delaware Networkers -- an excellent resource for discovering what our local artists, musicians and small businesses are up to; while many others had been shopping or strolling on Lower Main, saw our tent and wandered over to see what all the fuss was about.

"How cool!" said one smiling woman. "I just love this park! And a plant swap? What better way to meet the neighbors?"

Seeming to bear her out, our visitors didn't just take their new plantings and traipse off, they lingered -- like in the old days in a general store around pickle and cracker barrels -- chatting about gardening, mulching, fertilizing and local issues that shape our lives. As we helped carry boxes of mint, rhubarb and phlox to waiting cars, we heard snatches of conversations that ranged from drilling and poetry to the state of the economy and the plight of our local dairy farmers.

In fact, everyone who came wanted to know if The Plant Swap would be an annual event and their enthusiasm resulted in a surprising number of donations that will be used to buy new plantings and help support the many activities we sponsor in The Callicoon Creek Park each year.

Many thanks to all who made this first Plant Swap outing a "wonderful day in the neighborhood" and we look forward to many more!

Cleanup and Weeding at the Park Continues . . .

This year's Callicoon Under The Moon Concert Series is set. We start off the season on Saturday, July 10th with Beaverkill 5-4321 and the Riff Kings sponsored in part by Matthew's On Main. The following Friday, July 16th Basket Landing will bring their offering of music and dance. On Saturday, July 31st, Barbecue Bob and the Spareribs and I will be rockin' the park and the series will wrap up on Saturday, August 21st with The Holy Cows and The Dan Brother Band. All shows are at 8PM with a suggested donation of $10 at the door. Children under 12 will be admitted free.
